Surround Sound comes to Hollywood

The movies. Brought to you in Surround Sound. It sounds like a kid is crying behind you, but yet when you look, there is no kid. This happens before the movie starts and shows off the power of the cinema's surround sound system.

When the movie starts, this same system of sound which surrounds is nowhere to be found. The cars whoosh by, the buildings topple, the bullets blaze, but at no point is the viewer confused about where the sound is coming from. It is not coming from the empty space in the theater, it is coming from the movie projected immediately in front of her.

Now there are surround sound systems for the home. When these are engaged, the sounds they produce are the sounds of the periphery. Not the main sounds of the program being watched, but the birds cawing, the crowds murmuring. The fundamental driving sounds of the film, television program, sporting event are being produced from the front of the viewer. The surrounding sound is all noise.
